Being in a Leadership position in a business or an organisation is so much more than the title, the responsibility and the pay cheque.
People leading teams must understand that the part of their job description that says “manage the team” means so much more than simply giving instructions and telling people what to do.
Yes, your job as a leader is to deliver results and make change. That is a given. But to achieve that there is a whole lot of unwritten things that you need to do to make that happen in a way that is sustainable in the long term.
As a leader, to generate results sustainably and to build a successful business, all lies in the performance of your team. We must evolve our mindset from keeping things going to the mindset of unlocking the individuals in our team.
To Achieve Extraordinary Results as a leader ….
SERVE YOUR TEAM MEMBERS
Focus on SERVING your team members. Ask them “How can I help?”
The team doesn’t serve the leader, the leader serves the team.
Our job is understand each individual’s ambition, align it with their position and their deliverables and then empower them and help them achieve their set objectives.
The method of giving instructions and expecting results and then complaining when the results are not achieved is “last century leadership”.
HUNT BLOCKAGES
An important part of your job as a leader is to deal with confusion, frustration and underperformance in your team. Hunt for any blockages that slow down progress and diminish performance in people. Anything you can do to minimise confusion and frustration and multiply your team’s energy, do it!
A powerful tactic is to schedule regular one on one time with your team members so that you can connect with them on a personal level and give them support, help, guidance and confidence to enhance their motivation and feed their energy.
Show them you care about them and their success.
BE THE KIND OF LEADER YOU WOULD FOLLOW
We must understand that“people buy-in to the leader first, before they buy into the vision and the plan”.
A good team member that is led well should never leave ! They should stay with you for life, by choice.
When your team members are inspired first by you as a leader and then by the vision, you are on the way to achieving greatness.
