How to NOT Achieve Your Goals

goal

As business leaders, the fast pace of the day to day operations erodes our clarity of what we want to achieve in our businesses and for ourselves personally is at risk of becoming cloudy and scattered as the demands of day to day business and life takes over.

When this happens, our thinking and our actions can become reactive, task based and focused on fixing the immediate short term.

To achieve great things in your business, we must bust 2 Myths:

  1. The faster you go the more you will achieve
There is a big difference between acting fast in a reactive manner rather than acting fast in a proactive manner.  As business leaders, when we are in a reactive, firefighting state of action, we focus on the short term problems, rather than long term solutions which results in perpetual short term problems that keep us awake at night and eat away at our energy. The key to achieving more is to take the time to carefully plan your business strategy for the year which will provide you with the framework of what to do.  Then we must take the time to plan each month, week and day before it starts so that we take predetermined, proactive actions that are aligned with our goals for the year.  Then we can act with speed and vigour on what’s important rather than what is urgent.
  2. The more you do the more you will achieve
There is a big difference between being busy and being productive. We can spend our time doing 100s of small, relatively insignificant tasks, however this business is exhausting and frustrating as we never really seem to get anything important done. A sense of achievement comes from progress.  To really achieve your business goals, it is important to focus on high value, long term focused, game changing actions every day.  1 or 2 big things achieved each day has much more impact on your long term results than 100s of small things. Therefore, not only must we plan our months, weeks and days, we must move away from “to do lists” and move towards “goals lists”. Look at your list of things to do today and put a $ value next to each of these tasks – this will help you to prioritise what to do first and what to delegate or ignore.

One of the greatest remedies to chaos, stress and overwhelm is clarity. Having a clear plan for your business and your life with monthly milestones will keeps you on the railway line to achieving your goals.
